FALL SAILING CLASSES

A streamlined version of our Intermediate Learn to Sail Classes are available in an after school format on Wednesday evenings from 4 to 7pm. These classes follow the same Pram 2 / Sailtrek 2 curriculum and teach all core fundamentals needed for a sailor to develop their skills from a novice to independent sailor.

Intermediate Sailing (Pram 2) continues the progression from Pram 1. This class is an excellent fit for sailors ages 8-12 with some previous experience and ready to sail a pram on their own. Trained instructors lead the class through a series of carefully planned fun games and activities. We aim for the experience to nurture sailors' confidence through making new friends and developing seamanship skills. This class is primarily taught in our fleet of SailCubes, a pram designed specifically for new sailors. By the end of the class, our goal is to encourage sailors to try out and progress into an Optimist Dinghy or O'Pen Skiff. Sailors completing the Intermediate Sailing (Pram 2) class are encouraged to join our Adventure Fleet Program and Opti Green Fleet Racing Team. Prerequisites: Completion of a Beginner Sailing (Pram 1) class or equivalent knowledge and experience. Able to sail a pram solo in light winds.   

Intermediate Sailing (Sailtrek 2) is an excellent fit for teens ages 13 - 16 who have attended a previous sailing camp and would like to further develop their skills among friends. Trained instructors lead the group through a series of fun and creative activities designed to promote social interaction, team building, and improve dinghy sailing techniques. This class is ideal for teens who would like to try sailing a variety of boats including our Sunfish and C/420's. This class encourages sailors to share skippering and crewing responsibilities while exploring local landmarks around the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay. ​Prerequisites: Completion of the Beginner Sailing (Sailtrek 1) class or equivalent knowledge and experience.

FALL ADVENTURE FLEET

The Adventure Fleet Program offers a unique opportunity for sailors to explore the water with friends at their own pace. You can join us this fall on Sunday afternoons for our supervised Open Sailing and Expedition Daysails. We provide a trained instructor to assist with rigging boats ashore and help lead games and activities while monitoring safety on the water.

On the last Sunday of each month we will host an instructor-guided rally-style cruise to explore a nearby landmark before heading home. Daysails are perfect for our sailors seeking to explore more of the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay. A casual cookout and sailor social usually follows the sailing, providing an excellent opportunity to stay sharp with your skills, try out a new boat, and meet new friends. We'll have our fleet of Sailcubes, Sunfish, 420's, and Flying Scot ready for a fun day on the water.

This program is open to all sailors that have completed a previous MRYS Learn To Sail Class.

FALL RACING TEAMS

​The Green Fleet Race Team introduces Opti sailors aged 8 to 12 to racing and competition while participating with an entry-level travel team. Sailors develop the techniques needed to sail fast around a racecourse and compete in a circuit of regattas with other new racers. Coaches provide a fun and supportive team environment that sets the foundation for sailor progression into the Opti Champ Fleets and beyond.  

Fall Season: August 17th - December 10th

Practices: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30pm to 7:30pm (during daylight savings) and select Saturdays 9am to 1pm
Regatta Dates: 8/31 - 9/1, 9/14-15, 10/5-6, 10/26-27, 11/9, 12/7.

This program is open to all novice Opti racers aged 8-12 that have completed our Pram 2 class or equivalent. 

The Champ Fleet Race Team is for experienced Opti racers aged 9 to 14 seeking continued development of their skills on a regional-level travel team. Sailors progress into advanced handling and sail trim techniques while developing experience in race tactics, wind strategy, independent decision-making, fitness, tuning, and sailing by the rules. Coaches provide a fun and supportive team environment to both nurture and challenge a competitive sailor through a season of training and regattas.

This program is open to all experienced Opti racers aged 9-12 that have completed one season of our Green Fleet Race Team, Opti 3 Advanced Class or equivalent. ​
